Curro Castle offers a nursery school curriculum designed for the preschool child from 3 months to 4 years. It is based on the six Early Learning and Development Areas (ELDA) and stimulates and guide the young child to school readiness.

ELDA cover the following:

  • Physical well-being
  • Identity and belonging
  • Communication
  • Mathematics
  • Creativity
  • Learning about the world

Our babies and children of today will require particular skills to adapt to and solve challenges unknown to us. These skills are referred to as the 21st century skills, which comprise the three Rs, six Cs and two Ms. Two more Cs, Character and Citizenship, have been added to the original four Cs.

These skills are incorporated into ELDA and promoted throughout each day.

Curro Thatchfield practises a system of ‘invitational education’ in which learners are seen as able, valuable and responsible. Our ethos is governed by Christian values where learners are encouraged to explore and express their individuality within acceptable boundaries and ultimately take responsibility for their actions.

We guide learners to follow their hearts and develop into the best people they can be. Our broad curriculum covers problem-solving, creative thinking and the development of skills and values. Both individual and group work is evaluated. Learners are prepared for the matriculation examinations set by the Independent Examinations Board (IEB).

FOUNDATION PHASE: Grade 1 to 3

In the foundation phase we focus on teaching the foundational skills, concepts and knowledge that are required for further learning. We offer a vibrant, invitational atmosphere where the learners enjoy school and where they acquire a love for learning that will sustain them throughout their school years. We acknowledge the potential in each learner to reach their optimum ability, and therefore there is less emphasis on competitiveness and more emphasis on individual achievement. We create opportunities for personal growth in independence and responsibility so that the learners can accept the challenge of being personally responsible and accountable for their actions in the intermediate phase.

The main learning areas are:

  • Literacy – English: language of learning and teaching
  • Afrikaans or isiZulu or Setswana: first additional language
  • Numeracy: mathematical and number concepts
  • Life skills: skills from a variety of learning areas

INTERMEDIATE and SENIOR PHASE: Grade 4 to 7

In the intermediate phase, the emphasis is still on establishing basic foundations, but learners are led into more abstract thinking and independent work. Application of skills and concepts is also a main focus aimed at preparing learners for the senior phase in the high school..
