Hout Bay International School
Hout Bay International School is more than a school – it is a community of diverse individuals and families, a centre for academic excellence, for some a home away from home and yet more importantly a family for all those that are part of it. Few schools can boast that they belong to two international organisations spanning across almost every continent of the globe. The first being the International Education Systems (IES), a family of international schools committed to quality educational experiences for all who attend and, second, the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO), renowned for its high quality and rigorous academic programme.
Hout Bay International School:
- is a member of a worldwide network of international schools which work together, share expertise, and offer cultural and linguistic exchanges
- Focus on the individual student, through small classes, mentoring and a system of personalised learning
- Stress Internationalism, whether through International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes or national programmes that includes an emphasis on Internationalism and International Mindedness
- Promote the learning of multiple languages as a key skill in a globalised world
- Promote academic rigour
- Stress the development of character, self-discipline and learning how to learn
- Are flexible about the distinctive needs of the different societies and communities which they serve.
Curriculum – An International Education
We are authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Diploma Programme (DP). This curriculum is taught in over 4000 schools in 138 countries. We are also an authorized Cambridge International Examinations Centre for the IGCSE international examinations.
We aim to provide the academic tools and qualifications to open doors to future educational and life opportunities. We want students who want to make a difference in their lives. Our curriculum, as an IB World School, is relevant for local South African and international students. It extends beyond the classroom providing meaningful experiences and qualifications our students are proud to carry with them for the rest of their lives.
As a “Learning School” we are aware of the need to be at the forefront of educational thinking, offering the highest quality educational experience. Our objective is to meet the collective and individual needs of our students, preparing them for life in the 21st century and challenging and supporting them to reach beyond their perceived potential. We are conscious of our responsibility to provide the intellectual, physical and emotional skills young people need to be successful in an increasingly complex world and the motivation to make the world a better place. We are an international school with a global mindset and we cherish our local community and natural environment.
One can never underestimate the importance of the “healthy body, healthy mind” concept. Depending on the grade, a variety of age appropriate individual and team sports are on offer at Hout Bay International School. Where possible our teams enter local leagues and compete against numerous local and international schools throughout Cape Town.
Sports offered: Netball, Football, Hockey, Squad Swimming, Tennis, Cricket and Volleyball.
As part of our International Baccalaureate Mission Statement, Hout Bay International School aims to “develop… caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.” Not many schools’ locations afford them the opportunity to reach out to serve their wider community.
Hout Bay International School students are required to seek ways to service their community, in the attempt to become worldwide citizens that “think globally but act locally”.
Hout Bay International School strives to provide the opportunity to participate in and excel in the traditional and special cultural activities. Many life lessons and values are learnt and developed as students explore their talents through participation in the variety of cultural activities available to them.
Cultural activities include: Choir, Drama, Art, Music, Chess, Dance, Annual School Musical and One Act Plays.
