I went to Felixton from pre-school until Matric and I wouldn’t change that experience for the world! All we see is red & green ❤️💚

I’m not even sure where to start after we had the most shocking experience with admissions at this school. We relocated to Felixton from Ballito and did not for a second think that Felixton College would go to every avenue to NOT accept my child into their school. I thought it was odd that their marketing and admissions had asked for my Child’s OT report right off the bat. But sent it anyway, paid the R200 application fee and struggled to get any feedback from them. I kept calling to follow up and eventually the process started gaining traction. Then to get a phone call that our application was rejected by their finance department and that they could not share why. No chance to dispute or get feedback at all. I did not expect this since my child was previously at a curro school in Salt Rock where the fees per month were higher. And by the way, I earn 40k plus with my husband earning the equivalent - so there’s no ways we are unable to afford their fees. We were then given the opportunity to reach out to someone we trusted to submit their information as a “sponsor”. We submitted my sister-in-law’s father’s information. He has been working at Mondi for years and earns more than enough to not be flagged - and his step son attended this school under his profile! But again, they rejected his application with “red flags” without any further explanation. At this point I had given up, but our child’s God father - a previous matriculant of this school wanted to dispute this. He got in contact with the previous admissions person and the school’s chairman to address this. Only for their marketing department to have given them the wrong information to protect their unethical behaviour. They even went to the lengths to tell these various people that my husband is “just” a cashier at Tekkie Town, when he’s in fact a senior area manager. Which was clearly stated on all of the documentation we provided. At this point I was at total disbelief that a school that was recently voted as the “Best School In Zululand is actually so unprofessional. Part of me wonders if their current marketing person’s previous ties to the Zululand Observer had anything to do with this. I certainly did not get the impression that this school was the best from the get go. This experience has been unpleasant to say the least. We were made to feel like some sort of criminals for wanting our child to attend this school. This is absolutely unacceptable. After weeks of fighting back, the admissions calls us to bring our child for an assessment at the school to see “if” she can be accepted (She’s 3!!) And that they can make an arrangement if we pay 40k, “if she gets accepted”. My child had struggled for 3 years with major issues with her ears until we saw an incredible ENT in ballito who did a mastoidectomy on her. Her OT report was based on her state just after this procedure. With OT and speech therapy she has excelled. The report does not reflect he capabilities now and an assessment with a well known paediatric neurologist confirmed that she does NOT need remedial. And at this stage I had no interest to subject my child or my family to any further discrimination and even if they allowed my child to attend their school for free I would not do it. While this experience has been traumatic and stressful for us, I am thankful I know what I know now. I want my daughter to go to a school with a culture that is supportive, loving and non-discriminatory. This is the perfect example of how what you see on social media and in the local newspaper does not reflect the real culture of a school. On the other hand, our application to Grantleigh has been most pleasant and smooth. And I can see why they’re actually seen by the community as a more prestigious school. I’m sharing this experience because I believe we can’t be the only parents to have had this terrible experience- and if we are, then discrimination is undoubtedly a factor here.
